It was a Thursday morning and Darren and I had taken the day off work. We lazed over omelets and a movie, like we do most Saturday mornings, almost completely unaware that it was our wedding day. We had dropped off our wedding essentials at the Westin the night before. Around two in the afternoon, Darren dropped me off at the hair salon with a miniature bottle of champagne and a straw, and he left to go pick up the cake; and my wedding present.
I arrived in the hotel room (the Bonaventure Suite at the Westin Ottawa) before Darren, and not long after that, our photographer arrived, followed by my makeup artist and the florist.
Our wedding planner extraordinaire, Tia Ward, had equipped the room with chocolate and champagne. It was our photographer, Blair Gable, who had introduced us to Tia and suggested the Westin as a possible venue. We fell in love with the space and with Tia right away. She went to great lengths throughout the entire process to make sure our day was everything we wanted it to be.
Darren arrived while I was getting my makeup done. Tia poured us each a glass of champagne and Darren mixed himself a vodka beverage. Darren ironed his dress shirt and shined his shoes in between his nervous/anxious pacing of the suite. We took a brief interlude to exchange wedding presents and cards before Darren took leave to shower and change. It was now my turn to pace.
The ceremony was scheduled for six and Darren was still in the midst of shaving when our officiant arrived.
Cutting it close to the hour, Darren helped me into my wedding dress before getting dressed himself. Darren zipped up my dress and helped adjust the belt like he does on most mornings as I am getting ready for work. In a fit of nerves Darren seemingly forgot how to tie his tie. Our officiant, Alan Viau, came to the rescue with the perfect knot.
Darren did not have his best men around him to wish him luck, so he recruited us (us being me, the bride, Alan, Blair and Tia) to take a shot of vodka with him right before walking down the aisle. We also took the time to sign the marriage certificate prior to the ceremony itself. Blair and Tia were our witnesses.
The aisle was essentially the length of the terrace on the 23rd floor of the Westin. The end of the aisle was flanked by two large garden pots that Tia kindly helped me pick out a few weeks earlier; filled with a beautiful flower/twig arrangement conceptualized by Erin Carmichael of Full Bloom Floral Design.
Alan had worked with us weeks before to come up with some meaningful ways to lengthen our intimate ceremony. Darren and I wrote our own vows, which were kept secret until the ceremony itself. Our ceremony also featured a handfasting ceremony and a rose ceremony. Both Darren and I cried throughout the ceremony. I nearly lost my fake eyelashes entirely.
A la folie…
After the ceremony we took pictures on the terrace and in the suite before moving to the reception on the fourth floor terrace. Tia had picked the perfect location: a picnic table covered with white linens, clusters of lanterns hanging from the trees above, and our iPod dock under the table flooding the area with our favourite love songs.
Darren and I opted for a relaxed tapas style meal with a large charcuterie and wine. And cake, of course. After the meal we moved the picnic table and had our first dance under the stars.
On est crazy… de ce mariage très intime qui laisse la place à beaucoup de romantisme!
